CAF To Review FIFA’s $4.2bn Commercial Proposal

CAF disclosed in a statement on Wednesday that its President, Dr Patrice Motsepe, will chair discussions on the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise initiative during a meeting expected to take place next week.

The proposal, unveiled by FIFA earlier this week, seeks to establish a separate commercial subsidiary that would oversee the management of the organisation’s major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup, while opening the door for private investment.

FIFA estimates that the initiative could generate as much as $4.2 billion, based on a projected valuation of $20 billion for the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise.

If the proposal secures approval, each of FIFA’s 211 member associations would receive a one-time payment of $20 million in early 2027. In addition, annual development funding for the 2027 to 2030 cycle would increase from $8 million to $20 million for every association.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has defended the initiative, describing it as a major opportunity to accelerate football development around the world through increased commercial revenue.

Despite the expected financial benefits, the proposal has attracted criticism from several football stakeholders. UEFA, a number of leading European football associations and officials within the European Union have raised concerns over the growing commercialisation of football and the possibility of conflicts of interest.

Similar reservations have also been expressed by the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), both of which argued that FIFA should have completed wider consultations with its member associations before making the proposal public.

CAF stated that it would continue engaging with its member associations before adopting an official position on the initiative.

The African football governing body reiterated its commitment to working with its members in pursuit of increased financial resources and sustainable growth for football across Africa and the global football community.
