Fortunately, no fatalities were reported in the collapse, which marks the fourth such incident in the state within the past three months.

Emergency services, alongside local authorities, quickly responded to the scene, rescuing the trapped workers. One of the workers was rescued late in the evening with serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud noise and seeing the building collapse, prompting nearby residents and passersby to use axes to help free the victims before official rescue teams arrived.

The rescue effort was a joint operation involving local residents, Ikwerre Local Government officials, and representatives from the Rivers State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, who deployed excavators, fire trucks, and ambulances.

Evans Bipi, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, confirmed the incident and expressed concern over the use of substandard materials. He attributed the collapse to the use of inferior construction materials, including 12mm rods for the building’s decking, which violates standard building regulations.

This is the fourth building collapse in the state since Bipi assumed office. He also criticized the developer for not obtaining a government-approved building plan, noting that the Ministry had sealed the property for investigation and required the owner to report for further scrutiny.

Bipi warned that the government would no longer tolerate violations of building codes and substandard construction practices, stressing that such negligence leads to significant risks to public safety.
