10 months in detention.
The women—Hadiza Abba, Fatima Umate Malah, and Fatima Kannai Gamboi—were arrested on March 5, 2024, at Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah after two Nigerians were caught in possession of cocaine capsules totaling 1.69 kilograms. The women were initially suspected of assisting in the trafficking of narcotics.
The successful release of the women was made possible through extensive diplomatic and legal interventions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed their release on Sunday, noting the critical role of diplomatic efforts in securing their freedom.
After their acquittal, the women were handed over to the Nigerian Consulate in Jeddah. They were received by Ambassador Muazam Nayaya, the Nigerian Consul-General in Jeddah, and are now awaiting immigration processes for their return to Nigeria to reunite with their families.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement expressing gratitude for the diplomatic success and stated: “These women’s release follows prolonged diplomatic and legal efforts, culminating in their discharge and subsequent transfer to the Nigerian Consulate in Jeddah.”
The case, which attracted significant attention both in Saudi Arabia and Nigeria, highlights the importance of international cooperation in addressing legal challenges faced by citizens abroad.
