condemned the northern opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms, emphasizing that the northern elites have long dominated the country with policies benefiting their region at the expense of others.

Fapohunda argued that while policies like the federal character and quota system have been imposed on the southern part of Nigeria, these initiatives have primarily benefited the northern elites, while the majority of Nigerians have suffered. He stressed that it was time for the nation to recognize that the interests of the north and south are no longer aligned, and a major reckoning is needed.

On the subject of the tax reform proposals, Fapohunda contended that these initiatives were unlikely to succeed due to the lack of unity in the country. He argued that a unified tax system couldn’t work in a divided country, with the north repeatedly leveraging its influence by invoking “northern interests.”

He also criticized the north’s refusal to confront its underperformance, accusing the region’s elites of clinging to privileges such as the federal character system and the quota system for decades. In his opinion, this approach has drained resources from the south and stifled development.

Fapohunda stressed that President Tinubu’s focus on tax reform was misplaced. According to him, the proposed reforms would only exacerbate Nigeria’s problems because the country’s structural differences and cultural divisions demand a more nuanced approach. He called for regionalization, asserting that the north and south are fundamentally separate in their priorities and outlooks.

He further advised President Tinubu to abandon the tax reform agenda and address more pressing issues, such as the crisis in the civil service and the failure to implement major policies, like the 2023 agricultural project. Fapohunda warned that the country was at a crossroads, urging the president to reconsider his approach and to engage more comprehensively with the diverse needs of Nigeria’s regions.
