CBN Employee Testifies: I Handled Over $1 Million For Emefiele Without Any Reward

Osazuwa, led in evidence by the EFCC counsel Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), disclosed that he collected millions of dollars in cash for Emefiele, with the highest amount being one million dollars at once, along with subsequent transactions totaling $850,000, $750,000, and $400,000.

Osazuwa, who worked as a senior supervisor at the CBN, recounted his acquaintance with Emefiele dating back to his days as a dispatch rider at Zenith Bank in 2001, where Emefiele served as the Managing Director. Upon joining the CBN in 2014, Osazuwa continued to interact with Emefiele, who had then become the CBN Governor.

According to Osazuwa’s testimony, Emefiele would occasionally instruct him to collect money from various sources, which he would then deliver to Emefiele’s residence in Ikoyi. Despite handling substantial amounts of cash for Emefiele over the years, Osazuwa stated that he never received any form of reward or compensation.

Under cross-examination, Osazuwa confirmed his long-standing association with Emefiele since 2002, stating that he had been collecting cheques for Dumies Oil and Gas on behalf of Emefiele since his time at Zenith Bank.

These revelations come amidst Emefiele’s ongoing legal battle, with the EFCC filing fresh charges against him, including allegations of abuse of office, accepting gratifications, and corrupt practices. Emefiele’s co-defendant, Henry Isioma-Omoile, faces charges related to accepting gifts. The case has been adjourned until April 29 for trial and consideration of applications.
