Despite criticisms surrounding the introduction of the new card, particularly in light of existing challenges with the National Identity Number (NIN) database, NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, assured the public of the benefits of the new initiative.
Adegoke highlighted that the new ID card project is designed to be a single, convenient, and multipurpose card, eliminating the need for multiple cards for different purposes. This move is expected to simplify identification processes and enhance efficiency.
He further explained that the new card will have multiple use cases, including payments/financial transactions, government interventions/services, and travel. To facilitate the financial aspect, NIMC is collaborating with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System.
The card will be powered by the AFRIGO card scheme, an indigenous scheme powered by NIBSS. Applicants will be able to request the card using their NIN through self-service online portals, NIMC offices, or their respective banks. The issuance process will follow existing protocols for debit/credit cards, with the card being available for pickup at designated centers or delivered to applicants’ requested locations, with any associated costs borne by the applicants themselves.
