CITN President Advocates For Integration Of Remote Workers Into Tax System
Barr. Samuel Agbeluyi, the President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Nigeria (CITN), has emphasized the potential for increasing Nigeria’s internally generated revenue (IGR) by integrating young Nigerians engaged in remote work into the tax system…..READ ALSO CITN: Poor Accountability Of Tax Revenue By Government Responsible For Low Compliance
During a conversation with journalists regarding the upcoming 26th CITN Annual Tax Conference scheduled for Abuja from May 13 to 17, Agbeluyi highlighted the importance of leveraging remote work to bolster IGR amid the country’s persistent low revenue generation, particularly at the state level reliant on federal allocations.
Agbeluyi emphasized that young Nigerians engaged in remote work should not be dismissed as “Yahoo boys,” but rather recognized as legitimate contributors to the economy who could enhance tax revenue if properly integrated into the tax system.
He underscored the need for technological solutions to effectively bring remote workers and international businesses operating in Nigeria into the tax net, thus broadening the revenue base.
The CITN president stressed the significance of the conference, themed “Sustainable Tax Culture and Economic Roadmap for Nation Building,” which will address pertinent issues including the integration of remote workers into the tax system.
Agbeluyi also advocated for the autonomy of state internal revenue services, arguing that granting autonomy would enable states to develop their IGR capabilities, thereby reducing dependency on federal allocations and mitigating the negative impact of multiple taxation on economic growth.
He pointed to the success of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and emphasized the need for states, particularly economic hubs like Lagos, to enhance their technical expertise to optimize revenue generation.
In conclusion, Agbeluyi reiterated the importance of equipping tax professionals with the requisite tools and knowledge to navigate the evolving landscape of remote work and international business operations, ultimately fostering sustainable economic development.
