Yusuf Sule, the lead prosecuting counsel, informed a Lagos High Court in Ikeja, presided over by Justice Adenike Cokers, about this option on May 16, during the scheduled re-arraignment.

Evans and Emeka were set to be re-arraigned on an amended five-count charge, which includes murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and attempted murder.

However, during the court proceedings, Sule informed the court of the defendants’ intention to pursue a plea bargain. He mentioned that the terms of the plea bargain were under review by the Attorney-General of Lagos State, Mr. Lawal Pedro (SAN).

Evans is currently serving a life sentence following his conviction in 2022 for a kidnapping case. In February 2022, Justice Hakeem Oshodi of the Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced Evans, along with two others, Uchenna Amadi and Okuchuwkwu Nwachukwu, to life imprisonment for the kidnapping of businessman Slyvanus Ahamonu and demanding $420,000 in ransom from his family.
