Promes, 32, who currently plies his trade with Spartak Moscow, had previously been sentenced to 18 months in jail for the assault, which occurred at a birthday celebration and was purportedly sparked by a dispute over a stolen necklace.

The specific amount of compensation is yet to be determined, although reports suggest the cousin’s legal representatives have sought around one million euros ($1.1 million). However, the final sum is expected to be lower and will be specified at a later date.

Despite the court’s ruling, Promes has not made a personal appearance, and attempts to extradite him from Russia have proven unsuccessful.

Notably, a villa owned by Promes during his tenure with Ajax has been seized as part of the legal proceedings, raising questions about his ability or willingness to fulfill the compensation order.

The stabbing incident came to light as part of a broader investigation into Promes, which originated from intercepted wiretaps related to suspected drug smuggling.

In a separate case, Promes faces charges of importing a substantial quantity of cocaine through the Belgian port of Antwerp in 2020. Prosecutors in that case have called for a nine-year prison sentence, with the verdict expected on February 14.

Promes, who earned 50 caps and scored seven goals for the Netherlands, notably represented his country at the Euro 2020 championships, which were postponed to 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, he has not featured for the national team since then.

Having joined Ajax from Sevilla in a 15-million-euro transfer in 2019, Promes returned to Spartak Moscow in 2021, where he had previously been named Russia’s Footballer of the Year in 2017.
