Ronaldo, renowned for his stellar career at Real Madrid before joining Juventus in 2018, achieved remarkable success during his tenure in Italy, including two Serie A titles, an Italian Cup, and two Super Cups. However, his departure from Juventus back to Manchester United in 2021 sparked a contractual dispute regarding temporary wage cuts agreed upon due to the impact of Covid-19.
Despite accepting a salary reduction with the understanding that the withheld portion would be paid back once the pandemic’s effects diminished, Juventus failed to fulfill this commitment after Ronaldo’s departure. Consequently, Ronaldo sought legal recourse, claiming €19.5 million in unpaid wages.
The arbitration court’s ruling, however, mandated Juventus to pay €9.8 million to Ronaldo instead of the full amount claimed. While Juventus is reviewing the decision, Ronaldo’s victory signifies a significant financial gain and reinforces the importance of contractual obligations in professional sports.
