Critics Blast Peter Obi’s Birthday Wish To Gowon ‘A Desperate Presidential Move’
Mixed reactions have followed Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, after he extended birthday greetings to former military head of state, Yakubu Gowon, on his 90th birthday.….CONTINUE READING
Obi shared his message on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, praising Gowon for his leadership and contributions to Nigeria.
While some praised Obi for honoring an elder statesman, others were critical, questioning the appropriateness of celebrating Gowon, especially given his controversial role during the Nigerian Civil War.
In his post, Obi acknowledged Gowon’s efforts, saying, “In a time of hate, you stood for love. At a time of strife, you stood for peace. At a time of division, you stood for unity.”
However, the tribute quickly sparked a heated debate online. Supporters applauded Obi’s maturity and respect, while critics condemned Gowon’s regime, particularly for its role in the Civil War. Some expressed their dissatisfaction, arguing that Obi’s message seemed politically motivated, given Gowon’s polarizing legacy.
In response to the backlash, Obi defended his statement in a follow-up post, stating that true heroism lies in forgiveness. He further referenced Nigeria’s ongoing journey toward reconciliation, pointing to the symbolic burial of Biafran leader Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in 2012 as an example of the country’s efforts to heal past wounds.
Several users on X voiced their disapproval of Obi’s gesture, suggesting that his tribute to Gowon could hurt his political standing. Others questioned whether Obi was attempting to appeal to a wider audience, with one critic suggesting he was “desperate to be president.”
