Customs In Partnership With IPMAN, NMDPRA To Tackle Petrol Smuggling

the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and Dangote Refinery to curb petrol smuggling out of the country.

At a meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi, represented by Assistant Comptroller-General Timi Bomodi, emphasized the economic importance of stopping illegal petrol exports. He highlighted the role of geospatial surveillance and coordinated ground operations under the NCS’ “Operation Whirlwind” to track and prevent petrol diversion from refineries to designated stations.

Bomodi stated, “With eyes in the sky and robust record systems, we can ensure the integrity of the supply chain and curtail illegal activities.”

National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Comptroller Hussein Ejibunu, called the initiative a “duty to the nation” aimed at ensuring that fuel reaches citizens efficiently while cracking down on smugglers exploiting the system.

IPMAN President Abubakar Shettima expressed concerns about seized trucks and closed filling stations but pledged support for Customs’ anti-smuggling efforts, particularly in border areas. He urged stricter prosecution of smugglers to protect Nigeria’s economy.
