An Inspector of Customs (IC) identified as Haruna A sustained injuries in a violent assault carried out by suspected smugglers on officers of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCoS) in a border town in Katsina.

The incident unfolded on Wednesday when a group of armed individuals, believed to be smugglers, launched an attack on officers and personnel from the agency’s Federal Operations Unit Zone ‘B’ during an anti-smuggling patrol in the Dankama Area of Katsina State around 1:00 PM.

In a statement released on Friday, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Operations Unit Zone ‘B’ in Kaduna, SC Isah Sulaiman, confirmed that the injured officer was promptly taken to a medical facility for proper treatment and is currently responding well.

The statement emphasized that the Nigeria Customs Service is responsible for enforcing government fiscal policies to ensure the collective well-being of society. The officers of the unit are committed to preventing smugglers from engaging in illicit activities that undermine security and economic stability.

Comptroller FOU ‘B’, Musa Ibrahim Jalo, expressed deep concern about the attack on his officer and ordered a comprehensive investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the violent act. He warned that any further assaults on unit officers would not be tolerated and would be met with resolute resistance from the operatives.

Jalo asserted that such aggressive attacks would not deter the unit’s operatives from fulfilling their lawful duties, regardless of the challenges they might encounter.

The statement also appealed to traditional leaders, parents, and community figures to counsel their constituents against targeting security personnel. Anyone caught engaging in such actions will face the full legal consequences of their behavior.
