Nigerians React as Timi Frank Calls on FBI and CIA to Investigate Chicago University Over Tinubu’s Academic Records
In a surprising turn of events, Timi Frank, the former deputy spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has taken a bold step by calling on both the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to initiate a probe into Chicago State University (CSU). Frank’s assertion stems from the university’s alleged reluctance to disclose the academic records of President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement released last Friday, Frank insisted that CSU holds a responsibility to the Nigerian people to divulge Tinubu’s academic records. This move comes in the wake of recent actions by Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the previous elections. Abubakar sought an order from a US court in the northern district of Illinois, compelling CSU to release Tinubu’s academic records.
While Tinubu’s credentials indicate that he obtained a bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, and management from CSU in 1979, allegations of inconsistencies surrounding his certificate have cast doubts. Abubakar, in his suit filed with the US district court, emphasized the significance of Tinubu’s files in settling the academic background controversy and aiding the election petition tribunal.
In response to Abubakar’s application, CSU expressed its willingness to provide Tinubu’s academic records upon the granting of an order by a United States court. The university, however, expressed puzzlement at the relevance of Tinubu’s academic records to a foreign country’s 2023 election challenge.
Frank, seizing the opportunity to address the situation, urged the US government to step in through its security agencies. He expressed concerns about jeopardizing the long-standing relationship between the US and Nigeria due to this particular case. Frank questioned the integrity of the American university system, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in public office.
He drew parallels with the American system, asking whether, if in a hypothetical scenario, President Tinubu were the leader of the United States, American citizens seeking his academic information would be granted access. Frank emphasized the principle of accountability that underpins the relationship between public officials and the citizenry, stating that even former President Donald Trump faced trials and scrutiny.
Frank’s final remarks targeted CSU’s integrity, suggesting that the university should proudly disclose Tinubu’s records if there is no underlying ambiguity. The unfolding situation has ignited discussions among Nigerians, with citizens expressing mixed reactions to the call for investigation into Tinubu’s academic background and the university’s role in the matter.
As this development gains traction, both in Nigeria and beyond, the outcome of these actions remains uncertain, leaving many to ponder the implications for transparency and accountability in political leadership.
