In a groundbreaking move, Dangote Refinery, Africa’s largest oil refinery situated on the outskirts of Lagos, Nigeria, has propelled its operations forward with the arrival of its second shipment of US light sweet crude oil. This strategic maneuver marks a pivotal moment in the refinery’s quest for diversified crude procurement, enhancing its capacity and solidifying its position in the global oil market.

Amidst heightened anticipation, the vessel christened Otis embarked on its journey from Houston, laden with approximately 850,000 barrels of WTI Midland crude oil bound for Lekki, Nigeria. Scheduled to reach its destination by mid-March, this shipment underscores Dangote Refinery’s commitment to sourcing premium crude from international markets.

This development follows closely on the heels of the refinery’s maiden shipment comprising two million barrels of US crude aboard the very large crude carrier Gem No. 1, chartered by global energy giant Vitol. With the impending discharge of this cargo slated for next week, Dangote Refinery demonstrates its dedication to securing diverse crude sources to fuel its state-of-the-art facility.

Constructed under the visionary leadership of Aliko Dangote, Africa’s foremost industrialist, Dangote Refinery boasts a staggering nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day. While the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Ltd (NNPCL) has been the primary crude supplier since December last year, the refinery’s recent tenders to sell fuel cargoes for export signal a strategic shift towards active participation in the global oil market.

Notably, Dangote Refinery’s collaboration with Trafigura Group, a leading multinational commodity trading company, has been instrumental in diversifying its crude supply sources. With Trafigura facilitating the trade of two million barrels of WTI Midland crude, Dangote Refinery takes a significant stride towards securing its supply chain and ensuring uninterrupted operations.

As Dangote Refinery intensifies its operations and broadens its crude procurement strategy, it heralds a new era of enhanced refining capacity in Africa.
