Kelly Norways, an African energy expert at S&P, shared insights in a podcast titled ‘Exploring West Africa’s oil product flows in a changing refining landscape’. Norways highlighted that Dangote Refinery’s operations would notably reduce energy imports, with petrol supply potentially reaching 290,000 barrels daily from 2024 to 2026.

Norways mentioned the Nigerian government’s keen interest in ensuring a substantial portion of the refinery’s output meets domestic demand. While Dangote had initially suggested gasoline production might commence as early as May, analysts anticipate a more realistic timeline for scaling up operations to be in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Although Dangote Refinery was commissioned in May 2023, operational challenges hindered full capacity utilization. However, the refinery began receiving crude oil around December and started distributing diesel to local marketers in March.

Recently, the refinery announced a reduction in diesel prices to N1,000 per litre from the previous N1,600 per litre. Additionally, both Dangote Refinery and oil marketers have hinted at the imminent commencement of petrol sales next month.
