In the past four years, the escalating cost of jet fuel has compelled indigenous carriers to raise ticket prices to sustain their operations. The entry of Dangote Refinery into the aviation fuel market is anticipated to stabilize and potentially lower the cost of Jet A1, offering a more affordable fuel source for domestic airlines.

The 12 scheduled airlines, including Air Peace, Aero Contractors, Arik Air, and others, had previously agreed to increase airfares by 100 per cent to cover operational costs. However, with the possibility of a reduction in the price of Jet A1, passengers could soon experience a drop in airfares.

Captain Ado Sanusi, Managing Director of Aero Contractors, noted that while the price of Jet A1 has been relatively steady, airlines would welcome a price decrease. However, he emphasized that the extent of the price drop would depend on various factors, including Dangote Refinery’s pricing strategy and the cost of crude oil.

Sanusi highlighted the importance of consistent and steady pricing over weeks or months to have a significant impact on airfare reduction. The potential reduction in airfares underscores the positive impact of Dangote Refinery’s entry into the aviation fuel market, offering hope for more affordable domestic air travel in Nigeria.
