Tobi Amusan Storms To 100m Hurdles Win Ahead Of Diamond League Final

Nigerian hurdler Tobi Amusan continued her preparations for the 2026 Diamond League Final with a victory in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Grand Prix Brescia in Italy on Sunday.

Amusan crossed the finish line in 12.56 seconds to claim first place despite facing a strong headwind of 1.7 metres per second. American athlete Alaysha Johnson finished second in 12.62 seconds, while Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent secured third place with a time of 12.75 seconds.

The victory came only days after Amusan surrendered her long-standing 100m hurdles world record to American Olympic champion Masai Russell at the Zurich Diamond League.

Russell clocked 12.09 seconds at the Letzigrund Stadium to surpass Amusan’s previous world record of 12.12 seconds, which had stood for four years. Amusan finished second in the Zurich race with a season-best time of 12.23 seconds.

According to Ireporter Online, Amusan originally set the 12.12-second world record in the semi-final of the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

The Nigerian subsequently won the championship final in 12.06 seconds, but the performance was not recognised as a new world record because the race was aided by an excessive tailwind.

Amusan will have another opportunity to challenge Russell when both athletes meet again at the Diamond League Final in Brussels, Belgium, scheduled for September 4 and 5.

The Nigerian remains one of the most successful athletes in Diamond League history, having won the women’s 100m hurdles title three times in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
