BREAKING: Chelsea Sign Argentina Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez
Chelsea have bolstered their goalkeeping options with the signing of Argentina international Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa.
The 33-year-old goalkeeper has agreed to a three-year contract with Chelsea after completing his transfer to the London club.
Martínez, who helped Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, expressed his excitement about beginning a new chapter at Stamford Bridge, describing the move as an easy decision for himself and his family.
According to Ireporter Online, the Argentine goalkeeper said he was eager to get started at Chelsea and determined to contribute to the club’s success.
Martínez made it clear that his primary objective is to win trophies with his new club, saying his competitive mentality aligns with Chelsea’s history of challenging for major honours.
He also pledged to give his maximum effort whenever called upon, promising to approach matches and training sessions with commitment and passion.
Martínez began his football career in the youth system of Argentine club Independiente before moving to Arsenal in August 2010 at the age of 17.
After joining the Gunners, he spent several periods away from the club on loan as he sought regular first-team football and valuable experience.
His opportunity to establish himself at Arsenal came during the 2019/20 campaign, when he became the club’s first-choice goalkeeper toward the end of the season.
Martínez started Arsenal’s final 11 matches of that campaign and played an important role as the club lifted the FA Cup. He subsequently featured in Arsenal’s Community Shield victory before leaving the club for Aston Villa in September 2020.
During his six-year spell at Villa, Martínez developed into one of the Premier League’s most highly regarded goalkeepers, making 256 appearances for the club.
He also helped Aston Villa win the UEFA Europa League in May before eventually making the switch to Chelsea.
His impressive club performances cemented his position as Argentina’s first-choice goalkeeper after making his international debut in June 2021.
Martínez has since earned 67 international appearances and played a significant role in Argentina’s Copa América triumphs in 2021 and 2024, as well as the country’s World Cup success in 2022.
His performances have also earned him the prestigious Yashin Trophy, which recognises the world’s outstanding goalkeeper. Martínez won the award at the 2023 and 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremonies.
Chelsea officially welcomed their latest acquisition as Martínez begins his new challenge with the Premier League club.
