Tragedy In Kogi As Gunmen K!ll APC Chairman, Kidnap Passenger

Gunmen have killed the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman of Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Hon. Ishaq Onu Yunusa, during an attack along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway in Ofu Local Government Area.

According to Ireporter Online, the incident occurred at about 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026, around the Ojuwo Olijo area of the highway, when armed men reportedly emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire on motorists.

The spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, ASP Afusat Saliu, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday.

She said responding officers later discovered an abandoned blue Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 636 CH along the highway. Yunusa, who was reportedly the driver, was found dead inside the vehicle, while another occupant was allegedly taken into the nearby bush by the attackers.

Following the attack, security personnel were deployed to the area, with police and other security agencies launching a search of the surrounding forests in an effort to rescue the abducted passenger and track down the perpetrators.

The remains of the APC chairman were subsequently evacuated to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba for an autopsy as investigators continued efforts to gather information about the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, directed security personnel to sustain operations along the affected route and surrounding areas.

The command said the intensified security measures were aimed at restoring confidence among road users, rescuing the kidnapped victim and ensuring that those behind the attack are identified and brought to justice
