Fuel Subsidy: Sowore Warns Nigerians Against ‘Deception’ From Atiku’s Camp

The 2027 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has warned Nigerians against what he described as an attempt by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his political allies to mislead the public over the issue of fuel subsidy.

According to Ireporter Online, Atiku, who is seeking the presidency in 2027 under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), recently promised to restore fuel subsidy if elected, arguing that the removal of the subsidy under President Bola Tinubu’s administration had failed to deliver the expected benefits to Nigerians.

Reacting to the development, Sowore criticised Atiku’s position, insisting that his party had maintained a consistent stance on the subsidy debate.

In a statement shared on his X account on Friday, the AAC candidate accused Atiku and other established politicians of changing their positions on major national issues for political convenience.

Sowore also claimed that his party’s position during the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt had contributed to renewed pressure on the Federal Government over the impact of fuel subsidy removal.

He argued that politicians who previously supported or accepted the policy should not now attempt to portray themselves as the leading opposition voices ahead of the 2027 elections.

Sowore maintained that Nigerians should scrutinise the records and positions of political actors rather than being influenced by what he described as shifting political narratives surrounding fuel subsidy.

The controversy comes as political parties and presidential aspirants intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with economic policies, fuel prices and the cost of living expected to remain major campaign issues.
