Police officers reportedly disrupted a protest by pensioners in Lagos on Monday after tear gas was fired at retirees who had gathered at the Lagos House in Ikeja to demand the payment of their outstanding entitlements.

According to Ireporter Online, the protesters, under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and the Contributory Pension Scheme, converged on the government premises to draw attention to issues affecting their welfare and call for urgent intervention from the Lagos State Government.

The pensioners were demanding the implementation of approved pension increases and wage awards, alongside the payment of outstanding pension arrears and other benefits they claimed were still being owed.

The peaceful demonstration reportedly took a different turn when police officers deployed tear gas to disperse the retirees, forcing some of them to leave the area.

The action reportedly created tension at the scene, with the pensioners expressing displeasure over what they described as the use of force against them while seeking the payment of their legitimate entitlements.

The retirees maintained that their demands were focused on the implementation of approved pension adjustments, settlement of accumulated arrears and payment of other outstanding benefits due to them.

Meanwhile, a separate incident has reportedly claimed the life of a security officer identified as Stanley at Royale Estate in the Sangotedo area of Lagos State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday night when two unidentified men allegedly arrived at the estate on a motorcycle and opened fire on the security officer before fleeing the scene.

According to Ireporter Online, a source familiar with the incident said the attackers arrived at the estate between 10pm and 11pm and reportedly headed directly towards Stanley, who was on duty at the time.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, alleged that the security officer was shot several times, including in the head.

The motive behind the killing remains unclear, while further details surrounding the incident are expected as investigations continue.
