Amid high anticipation for the release of products from the $20 billion refinery, trading sources familiar with the matter revealed that Dangote has issued tenders to sell fuel cargoes for export, signaling a breakthrough for the nation’s fuel industry.

The refinery, inaugurated in May last year by former President Muhammadu Buhari, has faced regulatory hurdles delaying its plan to release aviation fuel (Jet A1) and diesel for sale in the Nigerian market. However, the recent move to export fuel cargoes reflects the refinery’s commitment to overcoming challenges and contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth.

With a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, the Dangote refinery, constructed by Africa’s wealthiest individual, Aliko Dangote, has the potential to shift Nigeria from a fuel importer to a net exporter. Situated near Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, the refinery’s entry into the fuel export market could reshape the dynamics of the industry in West Africa, boosting Nigeria’s position as an energy powerhouse.

While Dangote has not responded to requests for comment, sources indicate that the initial shipment comprises low-sulphur straight-run fuel oil entrusted to Trafigura, with loading scheduled for the end of February. Another tender involves approximately 60,000 tonnes of naphtha, with loading specifics expected to be revealed soon.

Insiders suggest that the refinery is gearing up to supply its initial fuel shipments to the local market in the coming weeks, offering two fuel types produced through a crude distillation process. Although upgrading units may take time to become operational, experts anticipate a gradual transition towards enhanced refining capabilities.

Dangote’s venture into fuel exports not only signifies a significant step towards energy self-sufficiency but also underscores the refinery’s potential to bolster Nigeria’s economy and reduce its dependency on imported fuel. As the refinery continues to navigate regulatory challenges and operational hurdles, its success could mark a new era of prosperity for Nigeria’s energy sector.
