Deadly Air Crashes Worldwide! NSIB Issues Crucial Warning To Nigerian Travellers

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has reassured the public that Nigeria’s airspace remains safe for domestic flights, despite recent alarming aviation incidents worldwide.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Morning Brief, NSIB Director General Captain Alex Badeh Jr. cited robust safety records from domestic airlines like Air Peace, Ibom Air, Aero Contractors, and Arik, which collectively transported over 63,083 passengers in the past week without a single reported incident.….READ MORE 

This statement comes amid growing global concerns following serious aviation mishaps, including:

• A collision between Delta Airlines and Japan Airlines at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
• A mid-air collision over the Potomac River last Wednesday that claimed 67 lives.
• The Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 crash in South Korea last December, resulting in 175 fatalities.

While Nigeria has experienced minor incidents, such as a Max Air aircraft’s nose-wheel damage in Kano and an emergency landing by a United Airlines flight from Lagos to Washington, Badeh emphasized that no major fatalities have been recorded recently, except for a helicopter crash in Bonny last year.

“I can confidently say our airspace is safe. Despite recent global events, Nigeria maintains a strong aviation safety record, and we have not experienced significant loss of life,” Badeh affirmed.

Badeh also underscored the rigorous safety protocols in Nigeria’s aviation sector, pointing out that occasional incidents are inevitable but do not reflect systemic failures.

“Globally, aviation remains the safest mode of transportation. When compared to road, rail, or maritime travel, air travel consistently shows fewer incidents relative to the high volume of passengers,” he added.

To illustrate this, Badeh shared the latest passenger figures from major Nigerian airlines over the past week:

• Air Peace: 38,983 passengers
• Ibom Air: 10,200 passengers
• Aero Contractors: 7,300 passengers
• Arik Air: 6,600 passengers
