Speaking at a press conference in Asaba on Friday, the Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije, affirmed that Delta State remains the financially strongest state in Nigeria.
Refuting claims from an online news platform, Tilije said, “This state has not entered into any borrowing relationship whatsoever—be it with partnerships, individuals, corporations, banks, or local, national, or international institutions.
“We have not borrowed a single penny since this administration began on May 29, 2023. I can confidently say in any forum that Delta State is, in financial terms, the strongest in the country.
“I say this with full confidence because I am fully aware of the state’s finances. We stand head and shoulders above other states in terms of financial stability.”
Tilije also highlighted the government’s focus on reducing debts and improving relationships with contractors. “We have paid significant amounts towards construction projects and are diligently reducing our debts. Furthermore, we have improved our contractual terms, enabling us to provide contractors with advanced payments—something that was previously challenging.”
Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, also praised Governor Oborevwori for his integrity and transparency in managing the state’s affairs.
Aniagwu described the governor as a leader who has demonstrated a commitment to maintaining financial accountability and fostering trust in his administration.
