United States President Donald Trump has proposed a controversial plan to relocate Gaza’s residents to neighboring countries, suggesting Egypt and Jordan as potential destinations for the displaced Palestinians. This initiative is part of his broader efforts to address the enduring Middle East crisis.

Naija News reports that Gaza’s population of 2.4 million has faced repeated displacement due to the ongoing conflict, exacerbated by Hamas’s October 2023 assault on southern Israel.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, President Trump described Gaza as a “demolition site” and indicated that he had discussed the potential relocation with Jordan’s King Abdullah II. He also planned to raise the issue with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Trump emphasized his preference for relocating up to 1.5 million Gazans, either temporarily or permanently, to facilitate peace.

He stated, “I’d like Egypt to take people, and I’d like Jordan to take people. Over centuries, Gaza has seen countless conflicts, and something has to change. Let’s build housing elsewhere, where these people might finally live in peace.”

This proposal follows a fragile ceasefire and hostage release agreement between Israel and Hamas, negotiated on the final day of Joe Biden’s presidency. Trump, now serving a new term, has claimed credit for the truce while promising unwavering support for Israel, which includes the release of 2,000-pound bombs previously withheld by the Biden administration.

The proposed relocation has sparked concerns among Palestinians, evoking memories of the 1948 Nakba or “catastrophe,” when mass displacements occurred during Israel’s establishment. While Israel officially denies plans for forced evacuations, some far-right voices within its government have advocated for such measures.

Trump’s comments have reignited debates on the humanitarian and political ramifications of his proposed solutions for the Gaza crisis, as the region’s rebuilding challenges remain daunting. The United Nations estimates that reconstruction efforts will take several years to restore Gaza’s infrastructure.
