Chinese Community Marks New Year Festival In Lagos

The festivities, symbolizing the transition to a new year filled with luck and prosperity, featured the theme “One World, One Spring, Hauxing Shines.” The event showcased a colorful array of cultural dances, music, and cuisine from both nations.
The Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture delivered captivating performances, blending traditional Nigerian arts with contemporary flair. Their vibrant costumes, energetic movements, and rhythmic beats thrilled the audience. Similarly, the Hauxing Kung Fu group and Art Troupe delighted attendees with mesmerizing snake dance displays.
Guests were treated to an assortment of local and Chinese delicacies, including Eba, Egusi, Okra, sweet and sour pork, Kung Pao chicken, dumplings, wontons, chow mein, dim sum, and Ma Po tofu. The festival also included an exhibition of Chinese and Nigerian products, a food festival, and a gala night.
Speaking at the event, Ms. Yan Yuqing, Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, described the Spring Festival as China’s most important traditional holiday, emphasizing its growing global recognition.
“This festival, set to be added to UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage in 2024, has become a shared cultural celebration worldwide, fostering mutual understanding and trust,” she noted.
Dr. Eric Ni, Chairman of the Chinese Industrial and Commercial Enterprise Association and Hauxing Art Troupe, reaffirmed the community’s dedication to supporting vulnerable Nigerians. He announced plans to launch a charity project titled “Together Fight Against Hunger,” providing N100,000 each and food supplies to 30 low-income Nigerian families.
“We remain committed to supporting Nigerians, offering scholarships, cataract surgeries, and aiding orphanages,” he said.
Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, Secretary to the Lagos State Government, highlighted the achievements born from Nigeria-China collaboration, such as the Lekki Free Trade Zone and transformative infrastructure projects like the Lagos Blue and Red Rail Mass Transit lines.
She emphasized the importance of unity, compassion, and dedication in fostering bilateral relations. “As we celebrate the Chinese New Year, let’s strengthen the friendship between Lagos State, Nigeria, and China, and build a world where diversity, kindness, and empathy thrive.”
Zhang Yi, Minister-Counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, expressed optimism for the Year of the Snake, a symbol of longevity, prosperity, and wisdom in Chinese culture.
Jaafaru Yakubu, Chairman of the House Committee on Nigeria-China Relations, praised China as a steadfast partner in Nigeria’s economic growth, calling for continued cooperation to achieve shared goals.
