DOES EXPERIENCE STILL MATTER IN POLITICS?
Lessons from the Public Life of Senator Adams Oshiomhole
Every election season brings familiar conversations.
Many voters demand change.
Fresh faces.
Young leaders.
New ideas.
These aspirations are healthy for every democracy.
But perhaps another question deserves equal attention.
Can experience itself become an advantage in public leadership?
Perhaps the better question is not simply how long a politician has served.
But what each stage of that journey has prepared them to do for the people.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole presents an interesting case study.
Long before elective office, he became nationally known as President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, negotiating with governments and advocating for workers’ rights.
Those years exposed him to the realities of wages, employment, public finance and the everyday challenges facing ordinary Nigerians.
As Governor of Edo State, the challenge changed.
No longer demanding solutions, he became responsible for delivering them.
His administration focused on roads, education, healthcare and public sector reforms, demonstrating how leadership evolves from advocacy to governance.
Later, as National Chairman of the APC, he managed one of Africa’s largest political parties, building experience in consensus-building, conflict resolution and organisational leadership across Nigeria.
Today, as Senator representing Edo North and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior, he brings that accumulated experience into legislative oversight of key national institutions, including the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Fire Service and the Nigerian Correctional Service.
His work in the Senate extends beyond debates.
He has sponsored legislation to establish a Federal Medical Centre in Edo North, advocated consistently for accelerated work on the Benin-Auchi-Okene-Lokoja Expressway, championed stronger responses to insecurity and facilitated constituency projects ranging from schools and roads to solar street lights, transformers, boreholes and entrepreneurship programmes across Edo North.
For many communities, those interventions represent more than statistics.
They improve access to healthcare.
Reduce travel time.
Support small businesses.
Expand educational opportunities.
And strengthen local security.
Perhaps that is where experience becomes meaningful.
Not in the titles held.
But in the ability to translate years of public service into practical benefits for citizens.
This does not mean experience alone guarantees effective leadership.
Neither does youth automatically guarantee innovation.
Democracy needs both fresh ideas and capable hands.
As another election season approaches, perhaps Nigerians should ask every candidate one simple question.
How has your experience prepared you to improve the lives of the people you seek to serve?
Because in the end…
Leadership is not measured by how many offices a person has occupied.
It is measured by how many lives those experiences have helped to improve.
