In a statement released by Peter Afunanya, the Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications for the DSS, the agency acknowledged the legitimate right of the labour movement to protest but urged for restraint in the interest of peace and public order.
The DSS underscored the importance of dialogue and negotiation between the Labour union and the Federal government, emphasizing that resorting to protests could escalate tensions and exacerbate the socio-economic situation across the nation.
Expressing confidence in the government’s efforts to address the prevailing economic challenges, the DSS urged Nigerians to afford the authorities the opportunity to implement measures aimed at ameliorating the situation.
Quoting the renowned poet JP Clark’s “The Casualties,” the DSS invoked the dangers of escalated conflicts, stressing the need for internal stability and unity in the face of global turmoil.
Furthermore, the agency called upon all sectors of society, including political parties, religious and traditional institutions, civil society organizations, and citizens at large, to reject violence and demonstrate leadership during these trying times.
Emphasizing its opposition to violence as a means of addressing contemporary challenges, the DSS reiterated its commitment to collaborating with other security agencies to uphold peace and security nationwide.
In conclusion, the statement urged vigilance among citizens and cautioned against allowing divisive forces to exploit the situation for their own agenda, emphasizing the collective responsibility to safeguard the nation’s peace and unity.
