Ebonyi Teaching Hospital Crisis: David Umahi Denies Sponsoring Protest

The Minister of Works, Chief David Umahi, has refuted allegations of sponsoring or directing a protest against the management of the Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH) in Uburu, Ebonyi State.

During a meeting with traditional rulers and community members, Umahi, who founded the hospital, described the accusations as false and misleading. He clarified that when approached by the President General in Abakaliki about organizing a protest, he explicitly advised against it.,,,READ MORE….

“I did not authorize any protest. When the President General asked me if a protest should be organized, I responded with a clear ‘no,’” Umahi stated.

He emphasized the importance of supporting the hospital’s leadership and discouraged actions that could hinder its progress. Umahi urged the community to refrain from writing petitions, particularly against the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Professor Uzoma Agwu, as doing so could harm the institution’s reputation and serve the interests of detractors.

“Let us entrust the hospital to her; she is one of us. Writing petitions against her or other staff members only serves the agenda of those who wish to see the hospital fail,” Umahi said.

He stressed that the hospital, which plays a vital role in providing cancer treatment to patients from the entire region, is far more significant than any individual interest. Umahi called for collective prayers and support to ensure the hospital’s continued growth and success.

Additionally, Umahi noted that Ebonyi State Governor, Chief Francis Nwifuru, has intervened to address the crisis, expressing confidence in the governor’s ability to mediate and find a lasting solution.

“The governor has kindly agreed to look into the matter. Let’s give him the opportunity to investigate and resolve the issues,” he concluded.
