During a press briefing in Benin City on Tuesday, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, the PDP caretaker committee chairman, accused the two leaders of neglecting their constitutional responsibilities.

“Two weeks after their inauguration on November 12, Governor Okpebholo and his Deputy Idahosa have yet to officially resign from their positions in the Senate and House of Representatives, depriving their constituencies of representation in violation of section 68(1)d of the 1999 Constitution,” Aziegbemi said.

He argued that their simultaneous holding of both legislative and executive roles denied the people proper representation, urging the governor and deputy governor to step down so their seats could be declared vacant and by-elections held.

Aziegbemi also criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the party of promoting illegality and undermining the law.

“How can they hold both the positions of Governor and Senator, as well as Deputy Governor and member of the House of Representatives?” he questioned. “It is only right and constitutional for them to resign their legislative seats, allowing for by-elections. But the APC thrives on lawlessness and continues to make a mockery of their constituents.”

In response, Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okpebholo, dismissed the PDP’s claims as unfounded, explaining that it is the responsibility of the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives to declare legislative seats vacant when members are elevated.

He urged Edo residents to disregard the PDP’s accusations, calling them a deliberate misrepresentation of the process.
