Confirming the successful prosecution, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale revealed that the undergraduates, Gbolahan Khalid Adesina and Perekebena Olombeni Micah, faced charges separately before Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel of the Federal High Court, Osogbo. Simultaneously, the remaining four defendants appeared before Justices O.A. Adetujoye and S.O. Adeyemi of the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan.
The convicted individuals, identified as John Oluwafimihan Adeyemo, Akinpelu Quadri Opeyemi, Qudus Olohunnoyin Baba, and Sholagbade Taofeek Olanrewaju, employed deceptive tactics, assuming false identities to defraud unsuspecting victims, particularly by posing as immigrants.
Adesina and Micah received stringent one-year jail terms each without the possibility of a fine from Justice Ayo-Emmanuel. Conversely, Olanrewaju, Atanda, Opeyemi, and Adeyemo were sentenced to two weeks of community service each by separate judges.
Furthermore, the convicts were directed to forfeit all confiscated items to the federal government, underscoring the EFCC’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks and recovering illicit gains.
This significant legal triumph sends a strong message against cybercrime, reaffirming the EFCC’s dedication to upholding justice and safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s digital landscape.
