Empowering Nigerian Law Enforcement: DACORE Data Centres Launched To Combat Insecurity

In a decisive move to bolster Nigeria’s security apparatus, the federal government has inaugurated the Data Collection and Registration Centre (DACORE), marking a significant milestone in the nation’s fight against emerging threats.

Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, Minister of Police Affairs, announced the full functionality of DACORE during a landmark ceremony at the West African Police Information System (WAPIS) programme in Abuja, underscoring its pivotal role in consolidating crucial data for law enforcement agencies.

Emphasizing the importance of DACORE as the linchpin of the WAPIS initiative, Gaidam highlighted the widespread adoption of WAPIS terminals by key government agencies, heralding a new era of enhanced collaboration in combating crime and maintaining security.

“Nigeria’s commitment to capacity building is resolute. Through extensive training sessions, law enforcement personnel have been equipped not only with the proficiency to utilize the WAPIS system but also with the readiness to maximize its potential in safeguarding our nation,” Gaidam asserted.

Addressing concerns over data protection, Gaidam revealed the recent enactment of the National Data Protection Law 2023, reaffirming Nigeria’s dedication to safeguarding sensitive information while actively participating in the WAPIS programme.

Zissimos Vergos of the European Union lauded the successful management of the African Cup of Nations by INTERPOL and regional law enforcement agencies, with WAPIS playing a crucial role in ensuring event security. He commended the efforts of Nigerian authorities in advancing WAPIS operations.

Highlighting the importance of data analytics and artificial intelligence in policy planning and regulation, Vergos underscored the urgency of addressing transnational threats such as cybercrime and misinformation, urging WAPIS officers to prioritize policy advancement.

Dr. Dieng Abdourahmane of ECOWAS highlighted the lack of infrastructure as a major challenge in combating transnational crime in West Africa. He expressed optimism for the expansion of WAPIS centres across Nigeria in the coming months, further strengthening the nation’s security architecture.
