Engineering Equity: Hon. Engr. Abubakar Momoh FNSE and Nigeria’s New Era of Regional Development
In a nation as diverse as Nigeria, regional development is not just policy—it’s a necessity. Years of uneven growth and infrastructural neglect have deepened disparities across the six geopolitical zones. The appointment of Hon. Engr. Abubakar Momoh FNSE as Minister of Regional Development by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marks a strategic turning point in the country’s quest for balanced progress.
A Technocrat with a National Mandate
Engr. Momoh brings a rare blend of engineering expertise and grassroots political experience. From local government governance to the National Assembly, his career has been defined by people-centered service and results-driven leadership.
Now at the helm of a restructured ministry, he oversees all regional commissions—including the NDDC, NEDC, SEDC, SWDC, SSDC, NCDC, and NWDC—tasked with delivering inclusive development across Nigeria.
Coordinated Development: A Unified Vision
Under Momoh’s leadership, the ministry has adopted a strategic framework focused on:
- Infrastructure rehabilitation
- Water and energy access
- Youth and women empowerment
- Environmental sustainability
- Post-conflict reconstruction
Despite fiscal constraints and legacy challenges, tangible results are emerging nationwide.
Water & Energy: Restoring Dignity
Solar-powered boreholes and mini-water schemes have been deployed across various zones, improving access to clean water, reducing disease, and boosting school attendance. Likewise, transformers and solar streetlights installed in underserved communities are enhancing safety, extending business hours, and improving quality of life.
NDDC: Infrastructure That Connects and Empowers
The Niger Delta Development Commission has commissioned over ₦84 billion in projects, including:
- The 25.7 km Ogbia-Nembe Road with seven bridges, connecting isolated communities and reducing travel time
- A 132KV transmission line and substations powering southern corridors and stimulating industrial growth
Beyond infrastructure, NDDC has built modern hospitals and health centers, easing pressure on tertiary facilities. Its state-of-the-art Skills Acquisition Centres—complete with accommodation, digital tools, and vocational training—are empowering youth and women with market-ready skills.
NEDC: Rebuilding the North East
The North East Development Commission has executed over 700 projects focused on recovery and resilience:
- Thousands of homes for displaced families
- Mega schools with labs, hostels, and libraries
- Strategic roads and bridges improving access to markets and healthcare
- Innovative programs in solar energy, recycling, and clean cooking technologies
Challenges and Commitment
While progress is visible, challenges persist—ranging from funding gaps and security threats to bureaucratic delays and public skepticism. Yet, Momoh’s transparent and consultative approach is restoring trust and driving momentum.
A Reflection of Renewed Hope
President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda finds a capable steward in Engr. Momoh. His leadership is not just about building infrastructure—it’s about building trust, opportunity, and unity. With all regional commissions now inaugurated, Nigeria is poised for a new chapter of inclusive growth.
As Momoh aptly puts it, “Development must be felt, not just announced.” And across the country, Nigerians are beginning to feel it.
