“Dangote Fires Back At NUPENG: ‘Even A Greek Gift Is Still A Gift’”

The President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, on Monday ridiculed the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) over its criticism that his refinery’s interventions amount to “Greek gifts” to Nigerians.

According to Ireporter Online, Dangote recently announced reduced petrol pump prices across several states, alongside a new initiative to deploy compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks directly to filling stations—an innovation projected to cut logistics costs significantly.

In response, NUPENG urged Nigerians to reject the price slash, alleging that the refinery was undermining workers’ rights, sidelining the union, and coercing drivers into rival associations.

Speaking to journalists at the refinery on the first anniversary of gasoline production, Dangote dismissed the union’s position with sarcasm. “They said we gave Nigerians a Greek gift, why don’t you give the French one? Even if it’s a Greek gift, it still means it’s a gift—and it will always remain a gift,” he said.

Dangote further acknowledged the obstacles his refinery has encountered but insisted that the company remains committed to serving both Nigeria and Africa. “The journey has been challenging because we sought to transform the downstream sector in Nigeria. Some felt we were taking food from their tables, which is untrue. What we have done is to make our country and continent proud. Previously, only two African countries were not importing petrol, but sadly, they have since returned to imports. This is harmful to Africa,” he added.
