Addressing the issue during a public lecture titled “Enugu State, Nigeria: New Political Leadership; Bold Economic Vision – Spotlight on the Health and Education Strategies” at the London School of Economics (LSE), Governor Mbah drew parallels between Nigeria’s federalism and a hypothetical scenario of a family with 36 children, where only a few are tasked with farming until they become weak.
Mbah applauded the recent transfer of railways and power to the Concurrent List, enabling states to play a more active role in these critical sectors. He also commended the current administration’s inclination towards further devolution of powers to the federating units.
He emphasized the importance of effective leadership at all levels, advocating for leaders who possess visionary qualities and a commitment to translating aspirations into tangible results. Reflecting on his administration’s goals, Governor Mbah outlined ambitious plans to significantly boost Enugu State’s economy and eradicate poverty.
Mbah underscored the significance of investing in key sectors such as security, health, education, agriculture, and water, as part of a comprehensive strategy to transform the state’s fortunes within the existing constitutional framework.
In conclusion, Governor Mbah stressed the urgency of empowering states to drive socio-economic progress, urging leaders to demonstrate political will and embrace people-centered leadership to address Nigeria’s development challenges effectively.
