According to  following the perceived snub of Nigerian nominees at the 66th Grammys, where Tyla, the sole non-Nigerian nominee in the inaugural Best African Music Performance category, clinched the award, some Nigerians have criticized the Grammy organizers for their alleged complicity.

In a recent interview with The Beat 99.9 FM, Lagos, Timaya expressed his opinion on the matter, stating that Nigerian awards fall short of credibility, comparing them unfavorably to the Grammys.

When asked about his thoughts on the notion that the Grammy Awards exploited Afrobeats and the need for artists to focus on local recognition, Timaya responded, “We don’t need to come back home. Even our own, which credible awards? Is it the Hip-hop awards, Hip TV awards [The Headies]? I don’t even know. They are not credible either. They are even worse than the Grammys.”

Timaya emphasized the importance of having a reputable domestic award platform that artists can trust, suggesting that until then, the Grammy Awards remain prestigious. He concluded by affirming the resilience of Nigerian artists, asserting their readiness to compete on the global stage.
