Explosive Twist Unfolds: Edo Assembly Launches Impeachment Proceedings Against Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu
In a stunning turn of events, the Edo House of Assembly has ignited a political firestorm by initiating impeachment proceedings against the state’s deputy governor, Philip Shaibu. The Majority Leader, Charity Aiguobarueghian, dropped the bombshell during a gripping plenary session on Wednesday, revealing that a staggering 21 out of 24 members have signed a petition seeking Shaibu’s removal.
The Majority Leader underscored that the number of signatures surpassed the constitutionally required two-thirds majority, intensifying the gravity of the impeachment process. The petition, dated March 5, alleges two grounds for impeachment: perjury and the disclosure of government secrets, casting a shadow over Shaibu’s tenure.
Speaker Blessing Agbebaku, acknowledging the seismic nature of the proceedings, accepted the petition and promptly directed the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Omogbai, to serve the impeachment notice on the beleaguered deputy governor. Adding to the high-stakes drama, Agbebaku granted Shaibu a mere seven days to mount a defense against the looming threat of impeachment.
As the political arena in Edo state bristles with tension, the unfolding events promise a riveting spectacle that could reshape the state’s political landscape. The quest for truth, accountability, and the future of Philip Shaibu now hangs in the balance, leaving the citizens of Edo state on the edge of their seats, awaiting the next chapter in this gripping political saga.
