During a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, Salma Anas-Ibrahim, the Special Adviser to the President on Health Matters, affirmed the government’s commitment to resolving issues raised by nurses and midwives across the nation.
The protests staged by nurses under the NANNM umbrella on Monday at the offices of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria in Abuja and Lagos highlighted concerns over what they perceived as constraints on their career advancement opportunities. They demanded improvements in welfare, salary structures, staffing levels, and protection of their rights.
The revised guidelines by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria stipulated that individuals seeking certification verification from foreign nursing boards must possess two years of post-qualification experience from the date of receiving their permanent practicing license.
Salma Anas-Ibrahim assured the nursing community of the government’s commitment to addressing their issues, acknowledging their pivotal role in healthcare delivery.
“Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare facilities, providing extensive care to patients and often spending more time with them than any other healthcare professional,” she remarked.
She further emphasized the administration’s dedication to enhancing the working conditions and welfare of healthcare workers nationwide, including nurses and midwives. Anas-Ibrahim highlighted the government’s efforts to foster a conducive environment, mitigate conflicts, and motivate healthcare personnel across all disciplines.
“We are fully engaged in resolving these concerns and ensuring the retention of our invaluable nurses and midwives,” she affirmed, underlining the administration’s determination to prioritize human resources issues in the healthcare sector.
