FG Identifies 31 States At Risk Of Heavy Flooding In 2024
The Federal Government has issued a warning concerning potential heavy flooding in 31 states across Nigeria in 2024. According to the Minister of Water Resources, Prof Joseph Utsev, 148 Local Government Areas in these states are at high risk of flooding. The states identified as high flood-risk areas include Adamawa, Akwa-Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, and Yobe. These floods are expected to occur between April and November 2024.
Additionally, a portion of the 249 Local Government Areas in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are categorized as moderate flood risk areas. However, the specific regions deemed to have moderate risk were not disclosed by the Minister.
The warning comes in the wake of Nigeria’s recurrent seasonal flooding, with the 2022 floods being the most severe since 2012. In 2022, flooding impacted 33 out of Nigeria’s 36 states, displacing over two million individuals.
