The fire, reportedly triggered by security agency shelling aimed at deterring oil thieves, followed an oil spill at the wellhead.

Civil Groups Demand Urgent Action

The Environmental Defenders Network (EDEN) and Defense for Human Rights and Democracy (DHRD) have condemned the lack of swift intervention by federal and state governments, along with regulatory agencies. They criticized the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and the Rivers State Ministry of Environment for their failure to contain the environmental disaster.

Chima Williams, EDEN’s Executive Director, stated, “This prolonged fire outbreak highlights gross negligence and disregard for human and environmental rights. The delay in addressing the situation has caused irreparable damage to local livelihoods and ecosystems.”

Call for Accountability

Clifford Christopher, Chairman of DHRD, warned that protests and legal action would ensue if immediate steps were not taken. He emphasized, “The Niger Delta has endured decades of environmental degradation due to oil exploration. The affected communities deserve urgent remediation, restoration, and compensation.”

This incident is the latest in a series of environmental hazards plaguing the region. Civil groups and local leaders continue to advocate for more sustainable and professional methods to combat oil theft and prevent future disasters.
