Foreign National, Guests Face EFCC Over Viral Naira-Spraying Video At Lavish Kano Wedding
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has summoned Ibrahim Mohammad, a Nigerien national, along with his family and other guests, over alleged misuse of naira notes during his wedding to Amina Babagana Zannah in Kano.

A statement from Dele Oyewale, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, confirmed the agency’s investigation into the incident.
Initially, media reports mistakenly attributed the naira-spraying event to the wedding of Fauziya Danjuma Goje, daughter of Senator Danjuma Goje. The misreporting led to public concern and extensive media coverage. However, Oyewale clarified that EFCC’s investigation showed the naira abuse actually took place during Zannah’s wedding reception. Zannah is the daughter of Hajara Seidu Haruna, also known as Hafsat Gold Nigeria, CEO of Hafsat Jewellery Enterprise, with branches in Abuja, Kano, and Dubai.
According to Oyewale, Haruna confirmed the incident and noted that the groom’s family, from Niger Republic, sprayed both naira and dollar bills during the celebration.
The EFCC emphasized that it will act against any currency regulation violations, regardless of the status or nationality of those involved, while also ensuring no one is wrongfully accused. The agency noted the importance of public awareness in its currency-protection campaign.
The statement read: “The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been drawn to a viral video showing naira notes being freely sprayed at a wedding ceremony in Kano, held on October 24, 2024. Initial reports incorrectly identified the event as the wedding of Mrs. Fauziya Danjuma Goje, daughter of Senator Danjuma Goje.”
“As a responsible agency committed to combating currency abuse and preventing the dollarization of the economy, the EFCC reviewed the footage and determined that the incident occurred at the wedding of Amina Babagana Zannah, not at Senator Goje’s family event.”
The EFCC has invited the groom, Ibrahim Mohammad, to its national headquarters in Abuja, along with others involved in spraying naira notes during the celebration.
“The EFCC appreciates the public’s support for its campaigns against naira abuse, and it will take action against any offenders, irrespective of their standing,” the statement concluded.
