2024 witnessed remarkable strides in digital education, particularly in urban areas, as schools adopted e-learning platforms, mobile apps, and other digital tools. Federal and private sector investments in tech-driven education solutions played a pivotal role in bridging global learning gaps, setting a new standard for innovation in Nigerian classrooms.

New Curriculum for Vocational Skills

The introduction of 15 vocational skills into the basic education curriculum was widely praised as a game-changer. Experts lauded this move for addressing Nigeria’s unemployment and underemployment crises.

Omowale Ogunrinde, founder of Field of Skills and Dream (FSD), emphasized the importance of technical education, stating, “Equipping students with practical skills fosters innovation and creates opportunities to eradicate poverty.”

Jessica Osuere, an education manager, agreed, highlighting how the expanded curriculum bridges the gap between theory and practice, enabling graduates to thrive in a competitive global labor market.

Student Loan Scheme in Action

By the end of 2024, the government’s student loan program had attracted 326,000 applicants, with N18 billion disbursed to tertiary institutions and an additional N5 billion allocated for student upkeep.

Akintunde Sawyerr, Managing Director of NELFUND, affirmed the scheme’s success, noting its critical role in expanding educational access for underprivileged students. However, rising tuition fees in public universities, driven by economic reforms, tempered some of this progress.

Challenges in Implementation

Despite these advancements, Nigeria’s education sector continues to grapple with inequities in infrastructure, teacher quality, and access. Rural schools remain under-resourced, and an alarming shortage of qualified teachers persists, particularly in private institutions.

The Registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Josiah Ajiboye, vowed to crack down on unqualified educators, emphasizing the council’s commitment to improving teaching standards across the country.

A Nation’s Call to Action

While the government’s reforms have laid a foundation for progress, stakeholders agree that more efforts are needed to tackle systemic challenges. With 18.3 million out-of-school children, education reform must remain a top priority.

As Nigeria steps into 2025, the successes of 2024 provide a roadmap for an education system that is inclusive, practical, and globally competitive.
