Led by the Sector Commander, Udeme Bassey Eshiet, the operation took place along the Asaba-Benin and Asaba-Onitsha highways, with collaboration from armed policemen from the state police command.
Dubbed “Operation Crash Negative Road Use Behaviors,” this monthly inter-agency patrol aimed to address traffic violations contributing to road traffic crashes (RTC) in Delta State.
During the operation, eight vehicles were apprehended for failing to install speed limiting devices (SLD), which regulate speed and are crucial in preventing RTCs. Additionally, one vehicle was caught for overloading, another for exceeding the prescribed load limit, and a mini-truck carrying excess goods and passengers was also intercepted.
As part of the operation, motorists arrested underwent health checks, including monitoring blood pressure and sugar levels. Offenders were subjected to public enlightenment before facing penalties, with enforcement carried out in collaboration with officers of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).
Eshiet stressed that the exercise succeeded in raising awareness about road safety among motorists along the Asaba-Benin highway. However, he expressed concern over overloaded vehicles attempting to evade arrest.
He urged all road users to prioritize safety and adhere to traffic laws to minimize, if not eliminate, RTCs on highways, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts to enhance road safety.
