Dr. Lawal Saad, the Dean of Students Affairs at the university, emphasized the urgency of the situation and urged authorities to intensify measures to prevent further kidnappings in schools. He highlighted that the university had experienced seven kidnapping incidents by gunmen between April 2023 and January 2024.
The appeal was made during an interaction in Gusau, the state capital, with Sunday Adebayo, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement on Safe School Initiatives.
Also present at the meeting were the State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Hon. Wadatua Madawaki, representatives from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), government officials, and security agencies. The gathering aimed to brainstorm solutions for securing schools and creating safer environments for students and staff.
Adebayo reassured that the administration led by Tinubu was fully committed to rescuing the remaining abducted female students from FUG. He urged parents and university management to remain patient, emphasizing that the government was actively addressing the situation.
Madawaki reiterated the state government’s dedication to collaborating with the federal government to combat student and staff kidnappings in schools and to establish peaceful learning environments.
While commending the efforts of security agencies in tackling insecurity, participants urged them to redouble their efforts to eradicate the alarming trend of school kidnappings, which is instilling fear and hindering learning opportunities for students.
