IPOB Laments That They Endorses Regional, Not State Police
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has voiced opposition to the idea of implementing state police in Nigeria, advocating instead for regional policing as a solution to the nation’s security challenges……READ ALSO Military Forces Neutralize IPOB, ESN Command Base
In a statement issued by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, the group emphasized that creating state police would risk empowering governors sympathetic to terrorist elements, potentially turning their states into safe havens for criminals and insurgents.
Powerful stated, “IPOB supports the establishment of Regional Police as opposed to State Police. The move by the APC-led federal government to introduce State Police is a ploy to consolidate power within the ruling party and does not address the root causes of insecurity and insurgency in the country.”
Highlighting the importance of regional cooperation in addressing security threats, Powerful added, “No single state government can effectively tackle insecurity without the collaboration of neighboring states. Regional Police commands offer a more comprehensive approach to security management and can prevent the misuse of power by individual governors.”
The statement underscored the need for constitutional reforms to empower regions to establish their own police commands, staffed by indigenous officers and overseen by regional governance structures.
“If the constitution recognizes six regions in Nigeria, then these regions should have the legal authority to establish and manage their own police forces,” Powerful continued. “These regional police commands would report to regional governance bodies, including governors’ forums and other regional stakeholders.”
By endorsing regional policing, IPOB seeks to promote a decentralized approach to law enforcement that fosters collaboration among neighboring states and ensures greater accountability in addressing security challenges across the country.
