Governor Oyebanji Targets Food Security For Ekiti

In a proactive move to ensure food sufficiency, the Ekiti State Government has established storage facilities across the state to purchase and preserve farm produce during the harvest season for release during periods of scarcity…READ MORE…

Governor Biodun Oyebanji, accompanied by key officials, inspected one of the facilities in Ado-Ekiti on Monday, emphasizing that this initiative aims to prevent food shortages like those experienced last year.

The governor highlighted that the focus is on addressing food shortages, reducing post-harvest losses, and ensuring year-round food availability. He described the program as part of a directive from President Bola Tinubu, urging state governors to prioritize food security as a strategy to combat hunger nationwide.

Governor Oyebanji revealed that Ekiti State cultivated over 6,000 hectares of farmland in 2024 and identified the lack of adequate storage as a significant challenge. The newly built facilities are designed to regulate food prices during scarcity, stabilizing the market and ensuring affordability for residents.

“We promised Ekiti State good governance, and this is a step in that direction. Last year, we cultivated over 6,000 hectares of land, and now we are ensuring that crops from our young farmers under the ‘Bring Back Youth in Agriculture’ program are stored for future needs. This will help stabilize food prices and prevent scarcity,” the governor stated.

Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade, added that the initiative would also create opportunities for youth in agriculture, encouraging them to increase production, knowing their produce will not go to waste. He assured farmers of the government’s readiness to purchase and store their crops, ensuring a steady food supply throughout the year.

This strategic move reflects the state’s commitment to combating hunger, supporting farmers, and achieving food security for its citizens.
