He Was Our Member, Paid March Dues While Contesting Under APC – PDP Chieftain ‘Exposes’ APC Governor

Silas Onu, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, asserted on Friday that Governor Francis Nwifuru violated the law by running for office under the All Progressives Congress (APC) while still paying PDP membership fees up until March when the gubernatorial election was conducted.

Speaking on the Friday edition of Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Onu addressed the tribunal’s decision affirming Nwifuru’s victory in the March 18 poll. He argued that, according to Section 177 of the constitution, the APC could not field a member of the PDP.

“We are saying that APC cannot sponsor a member of PDP as clearly provided under section 177(c),” he stated.

Onu maintained that Nwifuru’s status as a PDP member is supported by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) membership registry.

He pointed out that the registry “plainly” displays the candidate’s name under the PDP, not the APC.

When asked about whether the tribunal could not argue, as it did, that the case revolves around Nwifuru’s eligibility, he insisted, “It is about eligibility.”

He clarified that, as of March when the election took place, “this man [Nwifuru] we are talking about paid his membership dues in PDP. In the membership register of parties obtained from INEC, this name is not under the APC, his name is under PDP.”

Onu expressed frustration with the legal system, suggesting that the intended impact of the law and the qualifications outlined in Section 177(c) of the constitution seem to have been nullified.

“The law is of no effect, qualification of Section 177(c) is of no use, so we should just delete that section,” he commented.
