Heartache This Holiday: Celebrations Called Off
Awka – In light of the unfortunate stampede in Okija last Saturday that resulted in 22 fatalities during a rice distribution event, the Obijackson Foundation and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Sir Paul Chukwuma, have decided to cancel their upcoming Christmas activities…READ MORE…
Chief Ernest Obiejesi, chairman of the Obijackson Foundation, announced that the eagerly awaited Christmas celebration for children in Okija would not take place, emphasizing the importance of focusing on community healing during this difficult time.
A statement from the foundation read: “In light of the tragic events surrounding the rice distribution incident, the Obijackson Foundation has made the difficult choice to cancel this year’s Christmas celebration for the children of Okija. Our thoughts are with those affected, and we believe it is crucial to prioritize healing and support for the community right now. We look forward to resuming our efforts for the benefit of Okija in the upcoming year.”
Similarly, Sir Paul Chukwuma has postponed his planned distribution of Christmas palliatives as a tribute to the victims.
In his statement, Chukwuma expressed: “We are in mourning. I have instructed my campaign council to halt the in-person distribution of Christmas gifts to communities for the time being and to devise a plan that minimizes discomfort for the recipients. The tragedy in Okija has brought immense sorrow to the people of Anambra during this season of goodwill.
“This incident should not diminish the spirit of Anambra. Our sense of community, renowned philanthropy, and commitment to using our resources to provide relief and joy to the less fortunate must persist.”
Chukwuma urged affluent Anambra citizens to remain dedicated to supporting their communities, despite the recent tragedy, and to seek innovative ways to contribute during the holiday season.
He added, “The complexities of life can sometimes lead well-meaning efforts to unexpected outcomes. Let us unite in reflection, pray for the peaceful repose of the departed souls, and extend our support to their families.
