Attack Claims Lives In Plateau Community

The victims, primarily from the Irigwe ethnic group of Bassa LGA, were targeted during a violent assault on Sunday night that plunged the community into grief.

Despite efforts by security forces to foster a peaceful Christmas celebrations through engagement with various communities and stakeholders, armed assailants disregarded these initiatives, wreaking havoc in the area.

Riyom LGA Chairman Sati Shuwa confirmed the news, stating, “The community was attacked on Sunday night. Fifteen people have lost their lives. A mass burial has taken place, and two survivors are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.”

National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), Sam Jugo, provided details of the victims, which include men, women, and a one-year-old child. Among the deceased are Dauda Arabo (48), Hassana Wula (52), Basuna Moses (22), Faith Basuna (19), Laraba Randi (18), and others.

Linda Moses (32) suffered serious injuries and is undergoing medical treatment at an undisclosed facility.

Jugo issued a statement calling for calm and urging security forces to prevent any further attacks or retaliatory actions. “We mourn the loss of our kinsmen. May their souls rest in peace, and may God bring comfort to their families and the Irigwe nation.”

The Plateau State Police Command and Operation Safe Haven (OpSH) have begun investigations into the incident but have not yet released additional information.
